Visions of Bloomsday in Fling! (We hope)

Remember those exciting days earlier this spring, when Bloomsday Books and the whole Crestwood block was all abuzz with Hollywood types? The trailers parked in the Second Pres parking lot? All those lovely young gals?

See, I knew you'd remember.

Well, mark your calendars: Nov. 14 will be the Kansas City Premiere of the movie, which is now titled Fling. Tom and I have already lined up our tickets to Screenland, and we hope to see you all there too.

What ho, friends!

We've been on a PG Wodehouse kick around here.

It started innocently enough, with a friend who loaned us the initial DVD in the Hugh Laurie/Stephen Fry series. I confess it took us a little effort to get into the series, but once bitten we became rabid fans. We quickly begged for all the remaining DVDs in the series and went through them in quick succession.

Friends from Customers!

Last weekend, Tom and I held our annual mid-summer party to celebrate our anniversary (which coincides with Canada Day) and Independence Day and Bastille Day and Tom's birthday. This year's party included a backyard showing of South Pacific, thanks to our great friend Steve Simpson and his dad Max, who's been a staple of the bookstore lo these many years.

More on the Literary Festival

Our wild pal Jason Harper was an active participant in the Bloomsday Literary Fest activities, and ever the hard-working journalist, he also wrote about meeting Larry Kirwan of Black 47.

The Bloomsday Gazette

Just for fun, we created a mini-broadsheet for the Kansas City Literary Festival. It gives some details on the Bloomsday tradition, Ulysses and the details on the performances. I'm attaching it to this post.

Hope to see you at the Literary Festival!

Bloomsday at the Literary Fest May 17!

Bloomsday Books newsletter, May 9, 2008

We have closed the open shop, but the Bloomsday celebration continues in a very big way! Next Saturday, May 17th, in conjunction with the Kansas City Literary Festival on the Country Club Plaza, the Bloomsday play will be performed. It starts at O’Dowds Irish Pub and progresses to street performances on the Plaza before concluding with the Molly Bloom soliloquy on the main stage. Sylvia Stoner has once again put together a marvelous cast of professional equity actors and talented amateur thespians.
Here are the times, locales and scenes:

For no particular reason ... other than good cursing always makes me laugh!

Max at work in the Bloomsday stacks

While working my way through my typical blogs (all quite high-brow, I assure you) I came upon this and it made me laugh out loud.
Posted here in honor of our own resident architect: Maximum Simpson.

The first gathering of the Barflies without Bloomsday

After we closed the shop, we promised we'd figure out ways to stay in touch with our friends, the Barflies. It took a little while, but we held our first gathering at our home in March. It was an all-star cast -- in no particular order: Sharon Campbell, Max Simpson, Bill Byrne, Joanne Rensch, Jason Harper and Angelina, Heather McNeill and Brooke Blackstone, Brian Shawver, Steve Paul, Kent Johnson, Greg Huff, John Donnelly, Sally, Phil and Priscilla Dibble, and via phone from Ireland, Liam Daly.
